Aceitação e preferência de frutos para oviposição em duas populações de Ceratitis capitata (Diptera, Tephritidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Joachim-Bravo,Iara Sordi; Silva-Neto,Alberto Moreira da.
The influence of four host fruits, orange (Citrus sinensis L.), papaya (Carica papaya L.), mango (Mangifera indica L.) and apple (Malus domestica Borkh) on oviposition behavior of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824) was evaluated. Experiments were carried out on two C. capitata laboratory-reared populations: one with artificial diet for 10 years with periodic introduction of wild flies and other reared with artificial diet for 20 years without wild flies introduction. In acceptance experiments two pieces of a single fruit type were exposed to a group of 10 females; after 48 hours, these were changed by two new pieces of the same fruit type, and, in the end of the fourth day, the experiments were concluded. In preference experiments, two pieces of...

Antibiosis and antixenosis of six commonly produced potato cultivars to the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Neotropical Entomology
Mottaghinia,L; Razmjou,J; Nouri-Ganbalani,G; Rafiee-Dastjerdi,H.
The antibiotic and antixenotic resistance of six commonly produced potato cultivars in Iran including Aozonia, Agria, Cosima, Cosmos, Kondor and Savalan to the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae Sulzer, were investigated under laboratory conditions at 20 ± 2ºC, 65 ± 5% RH and 16:8h (L:D) in 2009. Antibiosis experiments showed significant differences in the developmental time, nymphal survivorship, fecundity, adult longevity of the green peach aphid among the potato cultivars. Intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m) for apterous aphids varied significantly with the potato cultivars on which the aphids were reared. This value ranged from 0.225 to 0.293 females/female/day, which was lowest on Cosmos and highest on Aozonia. Additionally, the estimated net...

Behavior of broiler chickens in four different substrates: a choice test Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Villagrá,A; Olivas,I; Althaus,RL; Gómez,EA; Lainez,M; Torres,AG.
The aim of this study was to determine the selection of bedding material by broiler chickens during the rearing period and whether the choice was determinant to their performing a specific behavior. To achieve this objective, a choice test was designed. A choice pen was constructed where birds could move freely around the four selected materials (straw, wood shavings, rice hulls and sand). Chickens were introduced in this pen in four groups of eight birds, three days a week for one hour per day and group, for four weeks. The location and the activity performed by each broiler were recorded every five minutes. Results showed a preference for sand compared with the other three substrates. However, differences between the behaviors performed in each bedding...

Determining smallholder farmers’ preferences for Push-Pull technology dissemination pathways in western Kenya AgEcon
Murage, Alice W.; Amudavi, David Mulama; Obare, Gideon A.; Chianu, Jonas; Khan, Zeyaur R..
The push-pull technology (PPT) has widely been disseminated to control stemborer (Chilo partellus and Busseola fusca) and Striga weeds (Striga hermonthica and Striga asiatica) in maize fields in Kenya. This study examined farmers’ preferences for various dissemination pathways in order to proffer better targeting of resources in an optimal dissemination strategy. The pathways considered were public meetings (barazas), radio, farmer field schools (FFS), field days (FD), farmer teachers (FT), the fellow farmers (FF) and print materials. Using a weighted score index and ordered probit regression, the different pathways were sequentially ranked as FD, FT, FFS, FF, print materials, Radio, and barazas. Marginal effects from ordered probit showed that farmers had...

Does diet in Celtic Sea fishes reflect prey availability? ArchiMer
Pinnegar, J; Trenkel, Verena; Tidd, A; Dawson, W; Du Buit, M.
Feeding preferences of Celtic Sea fishes were investigated using a database of stomach content records, collected between 1977 and 1994. The diet of cod Gadus morhua, hake Merluccius merluccius, megrim Lepidorhombus whiffiagonis, whiting Merlangius merlangus and saithe Pollachius virens changed markedly as the animals grew larger, and although large predators generally chose larger bodied prey, the variability of prey sizes consumed also increased. Large predators continued to select small, low value, benthic prey (e.g. Callionymus spp. and Trisopterus spp.) which were easier to catch, rather than larger, more energy lucrative pelagic prey (e.g. mackerel Scomber scombrus), even though these pelagic prey-fishes were nearly always available and were often...

Exposure to creosote bush phenolic resin causes avoidance in the leaf-cutting ant Acromyrmex lobicornis (Formicidae: Attini) RChHN
MEDINA,ANA I; MANGIONE,ANTONIO M; GARCÍA,MATÍAS.
We focused our study on the effects of Larrea cuneifolia phenolic resin on leaf-cutting ants from two populations (Sierra de las Quijadas National Park and San Roque) of Acromyrmex lobicornis in San Luis, Argentina. We conducted two bioassays of food choice (field and laboratory) to compare the effects of phenolic resin on ant workers from these two populations. Results of the field experiment indicated that there were no differences in preference for either leaves treated with resin or untreated leaves among colonies from both localities. However, results of the laboratory experiments with individual ants indicated a significant effect of population and treatment on the time spent in different treatments. While leaf-cutting individual workers from...

PACHECO,CAMILLA DE ANDRADE; AZEVEDO,FERNANDO ALVES DE; BARROS,VERA NISHIJIMA PAES DE; CRISTOFANI-YALY,MARIÂNGELA; VERRUMA-BERNARDI,MARTA REGINA.
ABSTRACT Planting new types of tangerines is an interesting alternative for Brazilian citrus growers due to the increasing domestic market. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate a less exploited variety of tangerine, the Fremont. The physics and chemical quality of the fruit and juice (mass, peel color, juice yield, acidity, soluble solids and maturation index) was evaluated, followed by sensory testing for ranking of difference and preference to Nules clementine and Ponkan tangerine varieties. The Fremont tangerine produces fruits that meet the standards required by the Brazilian consumer market, with an appropriate mass for sale of the fresh fruit, a suitable juice yield, and early to mid-season maturation. Furthermore, et the preference, together...

Host plants of the carambola fruit fly, Bactrocera carambolae Drew & Hancock (Diptera: Tephritidae), in Suriname, South America Neotropical Entomology
Sauers-Muller,Alies van.
Fruits were collected over a 12-year period to determine the host status for the Carambola fruit fly, Bactrocera carambolae Drew & Hancock, and other tephritid species in Suriname, South America. Over 11,000 fruit samples were collected from many locations and the total of 20 fruit species were recorded as host, ranging in infestation from heavy to occasional. Over 650 samples of 188 fruit species, including many wild species, were collected and no fruit flies were reared. This work, which started specifically to obtain information on the Carambola fruit fly, resulted also in detailed information regarding the importance, distribution and host preferences of several Anastrepha species, and the status of fruit fly parasitoids.

O arroz no varejo e os fatores que influenciam o dispêndio das famílias consumidoras AgEcon
Gameiro, Augusto Hauber; Gameiro, Mariana Bombo Perozzi.
Despite the well-known idea that rice is a commodity and thus it is unlikely to be differentiated, there is a large number of rice products available in the retail market, with different classification, standards, packages, brands etc. It can be observed significant variation in their prices, considering the brands, manufacturers, stores and also when the same product is considered in a short interval of time. Before these findings, we asked what the effects of rice purchasing strategies are over consumers’ expenditures. This paper proposes a mathematical model to simulate the decision process of rice purchasing by consumers with different preferences, in front of products available in supermarkets in a city of Sao Paulo state and another in Rio Grande do...

Obsessed with grasses?: The case of mara Dolichotis patagonum(Caviidae: Rodentia) RChHN
SOMBRA,MOIRA S.; MANGIONE,ANTONIO M..
The diet of mara (Dolichotis patagonum, Zimmeraman 1780) within the limits of Sierra de las Quijadas National Park (San Luis, Argentina) is described. Other studies regarding mara’s diet showed that mara, feeds on different species of grasses and shrubs. However, there is controversy regarding the proportions of these items in the diet or whether this proportion varies seasonally. Considering mara’s body size, anatomical features and physiology, we suggest that mara feeds on grasses in a greater proportion than shrubs and forbs. Moreover, giving that in this region precipitation varies considerably between seasons; it is also expected to find a correlation between the diet of mara and seasons. Fecal pellets of mara were collected during four periods...

Palatability of cat food with sodium pyrophosphate and yeast extract Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Rúbia Tabachi de; Haese,Douglas; Kill,João Luís; Lima,Anderson; Malini,Pablo Victor; Thompson,Guilherme Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT: Cat food formulation should not only meet the animal's nutritional needs, but also take into account food attractiveness. Our aim was to assess the palatability of food coated with sodium pyrophosphate and yeast extract, alone or in combination, and 20 adult cats were used in a two-bowl preference test. The preference for the experimental foods was tested by external application of sodium pyrophosphate (0.3%), yeast extract (0.2%), and a blend (0.5%) containing pyrophosphate and yeast extract in a same basal diet. In the present study, the cats showed preference for the blend (0.5%) containing sodium pyrophosphate and yeast extract.

Taste and Visual Influences on Hispanic Consumers' Preferences and Willingness-to-Pay for Pasture-Fed Beef AgEcon
Luo, Jie; Mainville, Denise Y.; You, Wen; Nayga, Rodolfo M., Jr..
Experimental Economics methods are used to determine Hispanic consumers’ sensory acceptance of pasture-fed beef and evaluate visual and taste influences on their overall preferences and willingness-to-pay (WTP). Two hundred and thirty-one Hispanic consumers in four experimental sites in Virginia participated in a laboratory experimental procedure where they visually examined and tasted pasture-fed and conventionally produced grain-fed beef, and then participated in a non-hypothetical Multiple Price Lists (MPL) experiment to determine their WTP. Hispanic consumers perceived significant differences between pasture-fed and grain-fed beef’s appearance and taste. Visual and taste acceptances are closely correlated to and significantly influence overall...
